In order to purify the souls of the inmates and open up a new chapter in life, the Superintendent has opened a western painting class since 2017, taught by Mr. Hu Yulun (Creator Art Music Short-term tutoring class director and art director). It has been processed for four years since 2020. A total of 59 inmates participated in the course. The western painting class mainly teaches drawing and watercolor. The basics of painting emphasize observation, and emphasize the composition and the three-dimensional sense of light and shadow. The host cultivates observation and patience in the process of learning, and expresses themselves through artistic creation, gains a sense of accomplishment, and enhances self-esteem , Through the influence of art, calm the body and mind.

Our supervisor used the Keelung Municipal Government Art and Literature Gallery for the exhibition of the achievements of Keelung Prison’s art, culture and education. The exhibition will last from August 3 to 31,2020. It will exhibit 32 works of students from our western painting class over the years. The works on display include three series:

  1. Keelung impression: Keelung is famous for its port cruise ships. Miaokou Night Market, Badouzi Fishing Boat and Fishing Market, etc., are all famous attractions in Keelung. The receivers used Keelung impressions as their theme to create Keelung Port cruise ships, temples, fishing boats, Fisherman's fishing and other works.
  2. Epidemic prevention publicity: Due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the first half of this year, many courses have been suspended. Under the premise of successful epidemic prevention in major prisons across the country, external teachers have been resumed in June to teach in supervision. After posting, with the theme of epidemic prevention, I created paintings such as corrective care, peace of mind in Taiwan, wearing masks to protect you from evil spirits, and the Minister of Health and Welfare guarding you and me.
  3. Self-expression: Taking self-emotion as the starting point, the host will use paintings to express their moods and images in their consciousness, including paintings such as the mood of imprisonment, the cry of their heart when facing drugs, and their self-image.

It is hoped that through the exhibition of this work, the inmates will have a stage to show themselves and show the results of their efforts to repent and improve. It will also let the public know more about the inmates' efforts in prison after serving their sentences and break the public. The negative perception of the inmates in the prison and the understanding and support of the general public can make the road of rehabilitation of the inmates go smoother.
